Statement on the Establishment of Sinjar Academy

The Board of Directors of Sinjar Academy is delighted to announce the formation of Sinjar Academy, a modern nonprofit academy opening in the Sinjar region of northern Iraq. Sinjar Academy will provide state-of-art educational services to a population of 500,000 people in northwestern Nineveh where large populations of Iraq’s ethnic and religious minorities, including the Yazidis, reside.

Sinjar Academy’s programs will be initially offered virtually in the areas of English as a Second Language, Information Technology, Business Administration, Secondary School K-12 Supplementary Education, and Mentorship. We will also offer other miscellaneous short courses aimed at building the skills of students.

Within five years, Sinjar Academy plans to build a campus in Sinjar and register the academy as a private university in Iraq. We will obtain full accreditation and offer four years bachelor’s degrees and two years’ diploma degrees in the areas of Languages, Information Technology, and Business Administration. Within ten years, we plan to add additional fields of study according to the needs of the region and country.

Academically, Sinjar Academy will rely on partnerships with other universities to develop a rigorous curriculum and courses or in order to offer dual degrees. We are open to partnerships with universities interested in serving the Sinjar region. We also seek experts and educators all around the world to help us create course content or teach our courses.

Financially, Sinjar Academy will rely on grants and volunteers in order to be able to offer free education for at least the first three years. The long-term financial plan is that Sinjar Academy becomes self-sufficient through income generated from services Sinjar Academy provides or from tuition and fees. Sinjar Academy will always remain a nonprofit enterprise for social good.

Finally, the Board of Directors is hopeful that this educational initiative will help Sinjar, the surrounding regions, and the entire country. We aim to create opportunities for Sinjar’s youth and to create a healthy private sector while fulfilling the technological needs of the region.
