Direct Cash Assistance & Financial Literacy in Sinjar
The United Community Collaborative has been working together to identify vulnerable families in Sinjar and support them through a Direct Cash assistance program. We are pleased to share that this project, funded by The William J. and Dorothy K. O’Neill Foundation, has now been implemented alongside a Financial Literacy Course to help families plan and manage their resources effectively.
Direct Cash assistance programs are widely used around the world as a dignified and effective way to support families in need. Unlike traditional aid models, these programs provide households with the flexibility to decide how best to use the funds based on their own priorities, whether for food, healthcare, education, housing, or other urgent needs. This approach recognizes that families themselves are best positioned to determine what will most improve their well-being and stability.
In Sinjar, where many families continue to recover from years of displacement and hardship, access to flexible financial support is especially critical. At the same time, the inclusion of a Financial Literacy Course ensures that participants have the tools and knowledge to budget, save, and make informed decisions that can strengthen their long-term resilience.
We extend our sincere appreciation to The William J. and Dorothy K. O’Neill Foundation for their generous support in making this project possible. Implementing programs in Sinjar presents unique challenges, and their willingness to invest in this collaboration demonstrates a meaningful commitment to reaching communities that are often underserved. Their support has enabled us to deliver both immediate assistance and practical skills that can contribute to a more secure future for families.
